Building communities where everyone belongs
Every person deserves to feel seen, valued and supported throughout life’s most significant experiences.
Compassionate Communities Australia is committed to strengthening community-led approaches that recognise and celebrate the diversity of Australia’s people, cultures and experiences.
By working together, we can create communities where everyone has the opportunity to live, care, age, die and grieve with dignity, connection and belonging.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Strong communities include everyone
Australia is home to diverse cultures, identities, beliefs and lived experiences.
Yet many people continue to experience barriers to support during ageing, caregiving, serious illness, dying and grief.
Inclusive communities are stronger communities.
When people feel welcomed, respected and connected, everyone benefits.
Building community capability means ensuring every person has the opportunity to participate, contribute and receive support in ways that respect their identity, culture and circumstances.
OUR ADVOCACY STATEMENT
Creating communities where everyone belongs
The Challenge
Many people continue to experience barriers to support because of culture, language, disability, geography, identity or life circumstances.
Too often, systems are designed around services rather than around the people and communities they are intended to support.
Our Vision
Communities where every person is welcomed, respected and supported throughout ageing, caregiving, serious illness, dying and grief.
Communities where diversity is recognised as a strength and everyone has opportunities to contribute, connect and belong.
What Needs to Change
We believe stronger, more inclusive communities can be built by:
✔ Working alongside diverse communities as equal partners.
✔ Supporting community-led solutions that reflect local needs and cultures.
✔ Improving cultural capability across organisations and services.
✔ Removing barriers to participation and connection.
✔ Ensuring people with lived experience help shape decisions.
✔ Creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect.
✔ Recognising diversity as a strength that enriches communities.
Working Together
Creating inclusive communities requires collaboration between:
- First Nations communities
- Multicultural communities
- People with disability
- LGBTIQA+ communities
- Community organisations
- Health and aged care services
- Local government
- Education providers
- Researchers
- Community leaders
Together we can create communities where everyone feels they belong.
BUILDING COMMUNITY CAPABILITY
Inclusion strengthens communities
Community capability grows when everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute and be heard.
By listening to diverse voices, building genuine partnerships and valuing lived experience, communities become stronger, more resilient and better equipped to support one another.
Inclusion is not an additional consideration—it is fundamental to building healthy communities.
FROM CONSULTATION TO PARTNERSHIP
Working with communities, not for them
Meaningful change happens when communities are involved from the beginning.
Rather than asking communities to fit existing systems, we advocate for approaches that are co-designed, community-led and built on trust, respect and shared decision-making.
When people help shape solutions, those solutions are stronger, more sustainable and more inclusive.
PRACTICAL ACTION
Every organisation can create more inclusive communities
Practical actions include:
- Building relationships with local communities.
- Listening to lived experience.
- Creating accessible information and resources.
- Supporting culturally safe practices.
- Encouraging diverse leadership.
- Removing barriers to participation.
- Celebrating diversity and inclusion.
Small actions help create communities where everyone feels valued.
